Description

This book provides a comprehensive exploration of the role of plant-based medicines, or phytomedicine, in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. It delves into how various phytochemicals can modulate key biological pathways involved in diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other neurodegenerative conditions. The chapters highlight the importance of phytopharmacological agents, such as polyphenols, curcumin, and resveratrol, in targeting oxidative stress, protein aggregation, and inflammation. Later, a few chapters discuss how polyphenols help protect mitochondria, and some explore curcumin's role in regulating the mTOR and autophagy pathways. This book is an excellent resource for researchers in neuroscience, pharmacology, and natural medicine, as well as practitioners seeking holistic approaches to neurological health.

Dr. Hagera Dilnashin is a post-doctoral fellow at IIT Roorkee and an accomplished researcher in neurodegenerative disorders, with a focus on Parkinson’s disease. Her work explores herbal medicines and bioactive compounds as alternative therapeutic strategies, bridging traditional knowledge with modern neuroscience.

She has authored over 25 research articles and book chapters in leading journals such as Neurotoxicity Research, ACS Chemical Neuroscience, and Journal of Neurochemistry. As an editor for Bentham Science Publishers and a peer reviewer for journals including Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, and Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, Dr. Dilnashin upholds the highest standards of scientific rigor.

A member of the Indian Academy of Neuroscience and the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society, she actively fosters collaboration within the global scientific community. In 2025, she was awarded the prestigious IBRO/Dana Brain Awareness Week Grant for her outreach efforts in neuroscience education.

Beyond academia, Dr. Dilnashin is a passionate thematic philatelist. Her exhibit on “Crane” earned a gold medal at KASHIPEX 2019, organized by India Post. Her interdisciplinary contributions and commitment to public engagement make her a dynamic force in both research and science advocacy.

Prof. Surya Pratap Singh is currently working as a Professor at Banaras Hindu University. He is a highly learned and distinguished scientist in the field of biochemistry and neuroscience. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Banaras Hindu University, India, and post-doctoral fellowships from prestigious institutions like All India Institute of Medical Science (India), National Institute of Neuroscience (Japan), University of Illinois at Chicago (USA), and Johns Hopkins Medical Institute (USA), highlights his commitment to continuous learning and research. His focus on neurobiology, particularly in areas like neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, neuroinflammation, and neuroprotective interventions, demonstrates his dedication to studying critical aspects of the human nervous system and finding potential solutions for neurological disorders.

Prof. Singh's active involvement in various national and international scientific societies and organizations, such as The Endocrine Society (US), Society for Reproductive Biology and Comparative Endocrinology (SRBCE), International Society of Neurochemistry (ISN), Indian Academy of Neuroscience (IAN), and Association of Clinical Biochemists of India (ACBI), further reflects his engagement in the scientific community and his efforts to contribute to the advancement of these fields.
