John Williams (1922-1994), né au Texas, a étudié au Colorado et obtenu son doctorat dans le Missouri où il a fait ses premiers pas de professeur. Après avoir servi dans l’armée de l’air de 1942 à 1945, il a enseigné la littérature et l’art d’écrire pendant trente ans à l’université de Denver. Il est l’auteur de deux recueils de poèmes, d’une anthologie sur la poésie anglaise de la Renaissance et de trois romans, dont Stoner, publié en 1965 et Augustus, publié en 1972, qui obtint le National Book Award.
