Stephen Tierney est professeur de théorie constitutionnelle à la Faculté de droit de l’Université d’Édimbourg. Ses travaux de recherche portent sur la théorie du constitutionnalisme comparé. Outre The Federal Contract: A Constitutional Theory of Federalism (Oxford University Press, 2022), il est l’auteur de Constitutional Law and National Pluralism (Oxford University Press, 2006) et de Constitutional Referendums: The Theory and Practice of Republican Deliberation (Oxford University Press, 2012). En septembre 2024, il a été nommé Honorary King’s Counsel, honneur conféré pour la première fois en Écosse. Il agit aussi comme conseiller juridique auprès de la Chambre des lords depuis 2015.
