JAMES M. CAIN est né dans le Maryland en 1892. Il se lance dans le journalisme et commence à travailler pour le Baltimore Sun, puis sert dans l'armée durant la Première Guerre mondiale. À son retour il collabore avec les journaux The American Mercury et le New York World avant de devenir le directeur du New Yorker. Il officie également en tant que scénariste à Hollywood. Auteur prolifique, il signera une vingtaine de romans dont cinq seront adaptés au cinéma. Il meurt en 1977.
